Key terms at a glance
Splits helps you calculate and track shared expenses, but you are responsible for checking amounts, assignments, payment handles, and payment statuses.
Only your friends can view your payment methods and the splits shown on your profile.
Splits does not handle payments in the app: all payment requests are stated in USD, and users pay each other outside of Splits.
These Terms of Service explain the rules for using Splits, an expense splitting app.
If you have questions about these Terms, contact us at:
hello@splits-app.comUsing Splits
Splits helps people organize shared expenses, create groups, split receipts or itemized bills, assign items, track payment requests, and share payment handles so users can pay each other outside the app.
You may use Splits only if you are at least 13 years old and are allowed to use the app under applicable law. Splits is initially intended for users in the United States and Canada.
By using Splits, you agree to these Terms and to the Splits Privacy Policy.
Accounts
You need an account to use Splits. You are responsible for:
- Providing accurate account and profile information
- Keeping your password secure
- Using your own account
- Letting us know if you think your account has been compromised
You may sign in with email or username and password.
We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, create risk for other users, or misuse the app.
User Content
You are responsible for the content you add to Splits, including profile information, names, avatars, group details, receipts, split photos, item details, payment handles, reactions, and any other information you provide.
You keep ownership of your content. You give Splits permission to host, store, display, process, and share your content as needed to provide the app features you use. For example, Splits may show split details to participants, show split photos to friends unless a split is private or hidden, and send receipt images to OpenAI if you choose automatic receipt parsing.
Do not upload or share content that is illegal, abusive, harassing, hateful, explicit, fraudulent, invasive of privacy, misleading, or infringing on someone else's rights.
We may remove content or suspend accounts if we believe content or behavior violates these Terms or creates risk for Splits or other users.
Receipt Parsing
Splits offers automatic receipt parsing. If you choose that feature, Splits sends the receipt image to OpenAI to help read the receipt and create split details.
Automatic receipt parsing may be imperfect. You are responsible for reviewing and correcting receipt items, totals, tax, tip, fees, discounts, assignments, and payment amounts before sending or relying on them.
You can enter split details manually instead of using automatic receipt parsing.
Currency Choices and USD Payment Requests
You can choose a supported currency for a split. Splits saves your most recently used currency and may suggest it for your next split.
If you switch currencies after entering amounts, Splits does not convert the existing values. The amounts are relabeled in the new currency, and you are responsible for reviewing and correcting them.
When you send payment requests for a non-USD split, Splits attempts to pull updated exchange rates and uses the most recent rate available to convert each requested amount to USD. All payment requests are in USD. Splits saves that USD amount with the request, so later exchange-rate changes do not change the amount requested. Exchange rates may be delayed, unavailable, or different from rates used by banks or payment services, so you are responsible for reviewing the USD request before sending it.
Payments and Payment Handles
Splits is not a bank, payment processor, money transmitter, escrow service, or financial institution. Splits does not handle payments in the app, move money for users, or store bank account numbers or payment card numbers.
Splits may let users store and share payment handles or identifiers for services such as Venmo, Cash App, Zelle, Apple Pay, or PayPal. Only friends can view your payment methods. Those payment services are operated by third parties, not Splits.
Users are responsible for:
- Verifying payment amounts, including USD amounts converted from another currency
- Confirming payment handles before sending money
- Paying each other outside Splits
- Resolving payment disputes with each other or with the relevant payment provider
Splits may let users mark requests as paid or received, but those statuses are user-provided and do not prove that money actually moved.
Notifications
Splits may provide in-app notifications. If enabled later, Splits may also send push or email notifications about friend requests, group invites, split requests, reminders, payments marked paid or received, account notices, and service updates.
You can control notification settings through the app or your device settings.
Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Use Splits for illegal, harmful, abusive, fraudulent, or deceptive activity
- Harass, threaten, impersonate, or harm others
- Upload content that violates someone else's rights or privacy
- Try to access accounts, data, or systems without permission
- Interfere with or disrupt Splits
- Reverse engineer, scrape, or abuse the app or backend services
- Use Splits to send spam or unwanted requests
- Misrepresent payment status or use payment handles deceptively
App Availability and Changes
Splits may change, add, limit, suspend, or discontinue features at any time. We will try to keep the app useful and reliable, but we do not guarantee that Splits will always be available, error-free, or uninterrupted.
Disclaimers
Splits is provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent allowed by law, Splits disclaims warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and any warranties arising from course of dealing or usage of trade.
Splits does not guarantee the accuracy of receipt parsing, split calculations, payment statuses, payment handles, user-provided information, or third-party payment services.
Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent allowed by law, Splits and its operator will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, lost goodwill, payment disputes, or losses related to third-party services.
To the fullest extent allowed by law, the total liability of Splits and its operator for any claim related to the app will be limited to the greater of the amount you paid to Splits in the 12 months before the claim or 100 USD.
Some places do not allow certain limitations, so some of these limits may not apply to you.
Account Deletion
Deleting your account may remove or anonymize profile and private account data, but shared split history may remain for other participants.
Governing Law and Disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of California, United States, without regard to conflict of law rules.
Before starting a formal dispute, you agree to contact us at hello@splits-app.com and try to resolve the issue informally.
If a dispute cannot be resolved informally, disputes will be handled in courts located in California, unless applicable law requires otherwise.
Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If changes are material, we will provide notice in the app or by another reasonable method. The updated Terms will be effective when posted unless stated otherwise.
If you continue using Splits after the Terms are updated, you agree to the updated Terms.
