Privacy at a glance
Your payment methods and the splits shown on your profile are visible only to your friends.
People directly involved in a split will be able to see the information needed to participate in the split.
Splits does not handle payments in the app or store bank account or payment card numbers.
If you use receipt scanning, the receipt is sent to OpenAI for parsing; you can always enter a split manually instead.
This Privacy Policy explains how Splits collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you use the Splits mobile app and related services.
If you have questions or requests about this Privacy Policy, contact us at:
hello@splits-app.comInformation We Collect
We collect information you provide, information created when you use Splits, and limited technical information needed to run the app.
Account and Profile Information
When you create or use an account, Splits may collect:
- Email address
- Username
- Password authentication information
- Full name
- Profile photo or avatar
- Account settings, such as notification and privacy preferences
Other signed-in users may be able to find your profile by username, full name, or other profile information so they can send friend requests, add you to groups, or include you in splits.
Split, Group, and Social Information
When you use Splits, we may collect and store:
- Friends, friend requests, groups, and group memberships
- Split titles, participants, placeholder participant names, payer selections, and split status
- Item names, prices, quantities, tax, tip, fees, discounts, totals, and assignments
- Payment request status, such as marked paid or received
- Reactions, reminders, and other activity related to splits
- Private or hidden split preferences
Shared split history may remain visible to other participants even if one user later deletes their account, so those participants do not lose their own bill history.
Photos, Receipts, and Camera/Photo Library Access
If you choose to use camera or photo features, Splits may collect:
- Receipt images you capture or upload
- Split photos or memory photos
- Profile and group avatars
Receipt images are used to help create and review split details. Receipt images are private and are only visible according to the split access rules in the app.
Split photos, other than receipts, may be visible to your friends by default unless the split is made private or hidden. A private or hidden split may still be visible to the people directly involved in that split.
Profile and group avatars may be visible to other users as part of normal profile, friend, group, and split features. Some avatar image URLs may be publicly accessible if stored in a public image bucket.
Receipt Parsing
If you choose automatic receipt parsing, Splits sends the receipt image to OpenAI so the receipt can be read and converted into split details such as merchant name, items, tax, tip, fees, discounts, totals, and confidence information.
You can enter split details manually instead of using automatic receipt parsing. If you do not use automatic receipt parsing, Splits does not send that receipt image to OpenAI for parsing.
Payment Method Handles
If you add payment methods, Splits may store the payment handles or identifiers you enter, such as Venmo, Cash App, Zelle, Apple Pay, or PayPal details.
Splits does not process payments, move money, or store bank account numbers or payment card numbers. Only your friends can view your payment methods on your profile or through payment-related split features. People who are not your friends cannot view your payment methods. You can hide payment methods from friends in the Edit Payment Methods screen using the options button in the top right.
Currency and Conversion Information
Splits may store the currency selected for each split, your most recently used currency, the original amounts entered in that currency, the most recent exchange rate available when a conversion is made, and the resulting USD amount used for a payment request.
Changing the selected currency does not convert amounts already entered. It relabels those amounts in the newly selected currency, so you should review and correct them before continuing.
When payment requests are sent, Splits attempts to pull updated exchange rates and uses the most recent rate available to convert non-USD amounts to USD. All payment requests are in USD. The converted USD amount is saved with the request so later exchange-rate changes do not change that request.
Subscription Information
If you purchase a premium subscription, purchases are handled by Apple App Store or Google Play. Splits uses RevenueCat to help manage subscription status, entitlement status, product identifiers, expiration dates, renewal status, and related subscription metadata.
Splits does not receive or store your full payment card details from Apple or Google.
Notifications
Splits may collect and use information needed to show in-app notifications. If enabled later, Splits may also send push or email notifications about friend requests, group invites, split requests, reminders, payments marked paid or received, account notices, and service updates.
Reports and Safety Information
If you report another user or a split, Splits may collect and retain the selected report reasons, any explanation you provide, relevant account and split identifiers and snapshots, the submission time, and delivery or review status. We use this information to investigate abuse, fraud, safety concerns, and potential violations of our Terms.
Analytics and Technical Information
Splits may collect limited technical and usage information needed to operate, secure, debug, and improve the app. This may include app activity, feature usage, device or app diagnostics, error information, and similar operational data.
Splits does not use your receipts, split details, photos, or other user content for advertising.

Account Deletion and Privacy Requests
You may contact us to request access, correction, deletion, or other help with your personal information. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request.

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information. For example, Splits relies on authentication, access controls, private storage for sensitive split materials such as receipts, and backend security rules.
No app, network, or storage system can be guaranteed to be perfectly secure.

Splits may help you open or copy payment handles for third-party payment services. Those services are not operated by Splits. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms and privacy policies.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If changes are material, we will provide notice in the app or by another reasonable method. The updated policy will be effective when posted unless stated otherwise.
